Superb 80 page tale long short story? mini novella? of a rich old man who hears an apocryphal sailor's story and decides to try to make it happen for realBeautifully told in a light mainly allegoricalfairy tale style but with under currents on several levels Maybe too many levels? as it felt a little un focused so slightly marking down to 45 stars and rounding down leaving room to mark it up to 5 when I re read it and get all the things Dinesen is doing here

This was one of the best stories I've ever read A profound combination of imagination and narrative structure The style and the story being told are so in harmony just like a dreamy literary space Touching not only by how it made me feel but also with its supreme intelligence
