Eglin's writing effectual capturing your attention Featuring a rose as a point of interest in the narrative is original and educational Lush descriptions almost allow you to inhale the scent of this remarkably stunning extraordinaire flower Braiding three individual stories together performed with ease by Eglin Wonderful historical events and places validate Eglin's immaculate research The mystery aspect well done speculating until the very end at least for this reader Delightful sagacious mystery thoroughly piuing my interest for other books in the series with a smart and intriguing botanist professor and honorary amateur sleuth Lawrence Kingston uite the English gent you'll want to stroll gardens with stopping to smell the roses Wonderful character and content worthy of notice how this capable author slipped under my radar until now will remain the ultimate mystery Highly recommend

Somehow I thought this was probably self published and was surprised to see positive blurbs on the back cover from Publishers Weekly and other such organizationsCould have used an editor One glaring example Kingston is concerned with a thought to be extinct rose found on Alcatraz and has several potential leads in California Seated at his breakfast table in the UK he glances up at the clock to see it's 8 am and a good time make those calls This clever detective is unfamiliar with zones?Somewhat convoluted and barely north of boring but I did finish it I'd picked it up at one of those little homemade libraries that can hold perhaps a couple dozen books It has popped up in a little park in our neighborhood and I've found some winners there Just reread THE FINANCIAL LIVES OF POETS wonderfully clever

While the mystery was good and started out the strong the pace of the book was rather slow and I had to force myself to keep going The ending of the book felt very film noir and reminded me of the Big Sleep The main character also really did not hold my interest but his friend Andrew and new pal Emma did The mystery was a bit messy and a lot of information was thrown at you towards the end Not a very satisfying read but it was entertaining enough I doubt I will pick up another English Garden Mystery but you never know

  4. Alonzo Church Alonzo Church says:

One star for a great hook and title The other star for not being offensive Alas the mystery is tedious the investigation is based on excessive coincidence and the detective is boring A mystery based on a long lost rose being found on Alcatraz ought to be better than this

The Alcatraz Rose joins others in the Lawrence Kingston mystery series prior books not seen by this reviewer and opens with an unusual move a thirteen year old begs Lawrence Kingston to investigate her mother's disappearance eight years ago which seems connected with her botany business and the clues Lawrence unearths seem to lead to an extinct rose rediscovered growing on Alcatraz Island some 5000 miles from its last known locationAnd so the mystery surrounds not just murder but history and botany and that's one of the unexpected flavors that sets The Alcatraz Rose apart from your standard 'whodunnit' genre readAnother surprise is its atmosphere; for fans of England will find the country's ambiance steeped into every page thick delicious and milky like a good English tea There are deliciously described meals and clues unearthed over breakfast There are clues hidden in books tendrils of uncertain associations that lead to further mysteries and an attention to building character and setting which lends to reader connections with protagonists and concern about their outcomeAnd after all isn't this the ultimate purpose of a good mystery to not just keep readers at arms length with entertainment but to immerse and involve them in the fiber and atmosphere of the adventure?A rare rose a child's plea and a 'cold' case resurrected all against the backdrop of England's culture and atmosphere what's not to like? The casual mystery will simply puzzle and entertain The superior production will take the time to create a setting and protagonists that are compelling Such is the nature of The Alcatraz Rose and the reason why its twists and turns of plot stand apart from the ordinary genre approach

It's a shame that there isn't of an online following for the Lawrence Kingston mystery series or maybe there is but not in America I would have loved to have stumbled upon this series sooner I love good ol' murder mysteries especially English ones and this one is very reminiscent of Ellis' Peters' Brother Cadfael series Not in the same time period obviously and our main character isn't a monk but they both seem to be wrapped up in mysteries that involve flowers or fauna Which may sound lame but is actually kinda coolLawrence Kingston is a respected botanist and acclaimed amateur sleuth When a thirteen year old girl approaches him asking if he'll look into her mother's disappearance several years prior he can't refuse What starts off as a simple cold case of a missing person rapidly evolves into a murder mystery followed by the discovery of a once thought extinct rose on Alcatraz Island Kingston discovers that many loose threads might actually be connected and he find himself trekking all over England and across the sea in America I may not be very good at predicting mystery endings but this one left me doubly stumped I would never have figured it out on my own had I not read all the way through I look forward to reading the rest in this series For fans of English murder mysteries I received this book for free from the author in return for my honest unbiased opinion

A fun and interesting read loosely based on real events

This mystery novel is highly entertaining in a veddy British sort of way With some similarity to the Rosemary Thyme TV series British of course the protagonist an amateur detective named Lawrence Kingston is a botanist and former professor of botany who finds murder and mayhem among the roses and snap dragons In this book the widowed former teacher finds a new love interest although there is not yet any hint of passion No sex please We're British He also helps a teen girl found out what most likely happened to her long disappeared mother I enjoyed the book not only because it is well written and entertaining but because it reminded me of the four years I spent in England when I was in high school back then called a girls only grammar school If you are an Anglophile and like mysteries you'll enjoy this book which is part of the Lawrence Kingston Mystery series
