This book is designed to be read over the course of 30 days, which is not how I read it for a variety of reasons, not least of which is that I just enjoyed it.Each day has a letter from Teresa of Avila, followed by some commentary from Burke and Lilles They explore what Teresa said, and I found myself learning a lot from their observations.I also found myself becoming friends with Teresa, a saint who s intimidated me and seemed impossible for a few years Even though I read The Way of Perfection with the SpiritualDirection.com Book Club and rather enjoyed it, I still held this grudgey sort of intimidated stance. This book has cured me and I now count Teresa as part of my Saint Posse She s a friend in heaven, and one who is salty and wry and holy.In this book, you ll find new quotables from Teresa, like my new favorite Peace of body will restore peace of soul But, beyond that, you ll find the kind of advice that those of us in the trenches of daily life can put to use.The interior life is something I m interested in, but that, if I m honest with myself, I m also scared of It takes work, and not easy work I m busy and overwhelmed and in a season of life that is stretching me to what feels beyond my capabilities Burke and Lilles have selected letters that aren t in the popular Teresa of Avila canon of quotes and then they ve expanded on them and pointed out the wisdom ...

This was my first time in reading a work of St Teresa of Avila I enjoyed her spiritual wisdom The authors did an admirable job of providing relevant historical context and adding clarity to the text of the letters.I think this would appeal to people who want a basic experience of reading works of a Saint tha...

I enjoyed this book because it provided me with a deeper insight into the way St Teresa of Avila provided spiritual direction to her spiritual children She gave them very practical and wise advice in dealing with spiritual issues This book is best suited for spiritual directors or for those who are already familiar with the life and spirituality of St Teresa of Avila While the letters tend to be cryptic, the authors do a goo...

I received this book from a Goodreads drawing and it is so much better than I expected The author takes snippets from Teresa s letters and explains and teaches from them He presents what he thinks Teresa intended for us to learn based on his study of Teresa s other works She was an amazing woman a nun seeking peace and learning in the midst of the Reformation She was honored and revered by some of the religious ones and was also reviled and punished by others Through all of the letters, she is pious, strong, learned, and always providing advice for others I think only Christians would appreciate this book If one has a religion other than Christianity or has no religion at all, this work would have little meaning St Teresa is revered by the Catholic church but I do not follow Catholic belief I follow Christian belief I have read it several times This i...

30 Days with Teresa of Avila is a 140 page book that takes us through thirty of St Teresa s 400 letters The topics covered in her letters include subjects like humility, mental prayer, spiritual warfare, and detachment repeatedly , to name a few I put repeatedly in parentheses, because three of the letters chosen deal specifically with this subject On the subject of detachment, St Teresa tells us the following, the so called goods of this miserable life are impediments, and I wish to have no choice in it and shall be contented wherever I may be sent In this brief lines, we can see a detachment to possessions and a detachment to personal choice, which is ultimately surrender to God.The two brief quotes above are just a small sampling of what is in this book In addition to letters from St Teresa, we also receive reflections from Daniel Burke and Anthony Lilles, the co founders of Avila Institute for Spiritual Formation With 30 letters, it is clear this book is designed to be read over the course of a month, and with short chapters, you can read each one over a cup of coffee in the morning or before you close your eyes at night Most of us know who St Teresa is but very few of us have taken the time to read anything by her, let alone her letters This book not only provided a daily boost, but also encouraged me to find the time to read her other works Way of Perfection and Interior Castle I know that wasn t the goal of this b...

I won this book from Goodreads It is a series of 30 short letters written by stereos of Avila, with the authors analysis and interpretation following each So it makes for an easy daily devotional to read before bed each night, or it can be read in one sitting, as the entire book is not very long The letters are fairly cryptic and are in response to friends letters or situations going on in late 1500s Spain Each letter is general advice and uplifting ideas to keep the faith in trying circumstan...

There is a weird feeling to this book Where your not sure if it has been dumbed down or if it has been smarted up Like maybe people who are in college could read this for a religion class But it is still in short parts, all in all it only took me like 2 hours to get through the whole thing It felt a little self congratulatory Honestly the ...

I liked that this book was divided into short chunks, which makes it easier to read each day I also liked that the Teresa s letters were presented first, just as they were, and then analyzed immediately afterwards However, there didn t seem to much organization of the ord...
