this, I can t even remember why I bought the book, but this was my number one read for January and I m so glad that I ve read it This is a slow build kind of book, there s a lot of things you have to learn and still lots of things I don t know hopefully I ll find out when Reign of Mist arrives so I can read that ASAP.There s so much that drew me in with this, the characters, the setting, the magic, the slow burn and the un ravelling throughout Not all of the characters are likeable at time I wanted to shake them and just be like WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS, but with their flaws it made them bepersonable and to know that they re not perfect made it evenenjoyable for me My god the setting I honestly pictured a certain place like the trees from Avatar, I can t tell you why, it just did, and once my mind was made up it was stuck with that Then we have the elements of magic, there s so muchthat I want to know about it and learn about the Ashai but not only that what on earth is happening with Bleak and other characters I m not going to mention names because spoilers.CharactersBleak is the main character, and has the ability to hear people s thoughts, she s always thought of it as a curse and wants to be rid of her magic I think Bleak will be like marmite, you ll either like or her or you won t, luckily for me I found her interesting She comes across as proud and doesn t like the help from others, she lost her parents at a young age and is referred to as a gutter rat quite often You feel for her quite a bit because so many people treat her like absolute dirt, throughout you see her gainstrength and make relations with other characters My gripe with Bleak is how she s always looking for her next drink, she s had a difficult life but she knowws what it does to her and yet she continues This is one of them times as previously mentioned where I just wanted to shake her Her best friend Bren is just so lovable, I couldn t dislike him, he always as her back and tries to help her even when she doesn t want it He s loyal and tries to do what s best for Bleak Henri and Allehra are part of the Valia Kindred They re tough female warriors and take no shit Henri comes off as stand off ish and it sometimes looks like she s jealous of Bleak for a few different reasons, I can honestly say I didn t know what to think of either of these characters Henri intrigued me and there were a few moments where things happened and I really warmed to her character, Allehra is a tricky character to place She s the matriarch and well respected within Valia, I still don t know what to think of her My two favourite characters by far are Fiore and Swinton they are complete polar opposites and even now I m still scratching my head at Swinton Where do I even begin Fiore is such a lovely character, he is second in command for Swinton and when he doesn t think something is right, he questions it and has all of the right morals I could ever wish for in a character Swinton on the other hand is loyal to the king and questions nothing, but why is he a favourite you may add I m going to put my hand in the air and say he s not the most likeable character BUT there is so much depth to his character that I m honestly just engrossed in him There s so much I want to know, and he s so intriguing He s a shadey character to say the least but he has his reasons not gunna lie, I need my answers and my eyes are going to be on the lookout for mydelivery tomorrow Never thought I d see the day where I liked the morally bad character, but here we are Then finally we have Dash, he s friends with the princess and his Pa is in charge of the stables He s hopelessly desperate to become a Kings Queens Guard He s obsessed with beingthan what he is I just loved his character so much, and I am SO eager to see what s to come What I liked The kindred are AMAZING They take no shit, their training is Brutal and they are true workers I can t praise enough the world building, I was just so immersed in it all the crossing had mother fucking VINES I just, I loved it The representation, a character was blind and I loved her determination and strength She held her head high and taught herself to do so many things, not only that but she taught another character to read a certain way, it was GREAT The training, I wish we d of seenbecause it was so interesting to see Brens tattoos, MY HEART The development of Bleaks powers, it s starts off as one thing, but when it divulges and we learn , I still needEven in the hardest of the characters we get to see their back stories and what makes them vulnerable, it adds so muchto them and makes you understand why they act in certain ways THE MAZE I have so many questions, and I m hoping these are answered What I didn t like Some things confused me a bit, I m unsure about certain timings pacing in the book because there are a few narratives throughout I didn t order the next book I have to waitOverall I am so so soooo happy I read this, I didn t expect to enjoy this as much as I did, and for me personally this is one book I haven t seen enough people read I m hoping I ll enjoy Reign of Mist as much as I did this and if I don t get my answers I don t even know what I m going to do I am desperate forpeople to read this, hands down one of my favourite books of the year and not enough people have read Heart of Mist 5 StarsReign theme such as alcoholism, which s obviously a real world problem, and that has been touched in such a real and cruel way in a fantasy world, I think it s great merit and something that I ve appreciated I think that after finishing it, I still have SO MANY questions, so I feel that this book was a great introduction to what will, undoubtedly, be a very interesting trilogy.3.5 5 You can find this one andof my reviews on my blog A Book A Thought. The book follows Blake, she s a girl with a very delicate mental state, she has been very bad after the death of her guardian, and because of this, and having a power that she still can t fully understand, she has begun to medicate herself with alcohol to be able to alleviate all the things that are happening in her life One day the king sends the Commander of his army to look for her to bring her to him, because of her power But the king isn t the only one who s interested in his power and on the way, they come across the leader of a society of warriors, the Valia Kindred, who has her own plans for Blake Without having anticipated Blake will be in the middle of a battle much larger than she would have imagined I think that this book doesn t handle anticipation very well, many things happen from the first page so the story moves very fast When you think you know the main problem of the plot, new revelations begin to appear and this causes the plot to take an inopportune turn, so you never really know what will happen, it s quite unpredictable, and I liked that But I understand that this can be kind of confusing, I had to re read some dialogues since there are revelations and important points in the quieter moments, then they take you by surprise and if you don t remember something later it can be a bit difficult to move trough, you know For me, this whole book is an introduction to the next one, I really feel that the next book will be very important because the ending of this one is very open and I still have a lot of unanswered questionsI liked the magic system, although I feel that it should still beexplored, I really liked the development of Blake s power during the book, I like it because she really isn t aware of the power she possesses and her growth is incredible, I m excited to see what she will do with this in the future She can read minds and dive into people s minds, discovering parts of their past and even implanting things there that aren t really there, you know So I think it s a power that can be further explored in the next book People who have powers in the book are called Ashai, and the reality is that there are very few in the kingdom and is a mystery around why, another of the things that still haven t an answer in the book as such, but I ve been taken by surprise with respect to this.I would separate the book into four characters, who make the plot move, they re Dash, Swinton, Blake Henri, so I ll talk a little about them.Being honest, I don t feel attached to any character as such, I think that following Blake is very interesting because of her alcoholism and how this is explored in the book, but on the other hand, her attitude is very difficult to follow,I understand that she s so rebellious and impetuous, due to the fact that her power overwhelming her and also her addiction makes her character very difficult, but even so, I couldn t connect because she s very hurtful with othersbut we ll see, I still liked the ending, and I have a lot of faith in the next book She has a best friend who s always taking care of her even though she treats him like trash, and that s Bren, so I loved him, he s adorable and a beautiful human being, I think she doesn t deserve him lolThen we have Dash, and when the book jumps down on his part of the story, at first I was like, who are you lol, but I liked the character, is a child with many convictions and great courage, I like him and although at first doesn t do much for the plot, thenwith him you can explore a littlethe royal family, there are many secrets and things hidden in the kingdoms as well, and about magicIs the protagonist of some very interesting revelations.Swinton is the king s commander, he s a very interesting character and I never know how to feel about him, at first I didn t like him and thenI liked him, because I started to knowabout him and about his past, there are also revelations about who he actually is and I found that very compelling, but then I ended up a little disappointed about his attitude again, so I don t know how to feel, but I know I m 100% on board with his story He has a very loyal companion named Fiore, and I name him because he s my favorite character in the whole book, he s funny and always goes to the front and isn t afraid to say what he feels, and I also find him very seductive, I don t know, I really like the character, and I would like to knowabout his cultureAnd then we have Henri, and I really don t like her, her personality is not for me, I can t really connect with her, she has a quite unpredictable attitude and she s always in a bad mood But on the other hand, I love the society which she s a part of, she s a Valian, this means that she s part of a society of female warriors who live in the forest, in a community built on trees, and I must say that it s truly amazing. It s also very interesting the way in which the society they have created is managed, those who aren t warriors and don t belong to the Valia Kindred, aren t welcome to live with them, they aren t expelled, but, instead, are sent to live below them in a place called Sticks For me as a person, all this is a bit cruel to me especially because women force young women to fight and it s quite hard because they re friends and must fight each other anyway, and they may never see each other again after that But as a society, I see it very interesting and I would like to know how it will continue from now on.Henri is in a kind of romantic relationship with Athene, who s her right hand, and I want to mention that because it s always a good thing to see some LGBT representation in fantasy and they re two very strong warrior women, so it s really incredibleI want to talk a little about the name of the book, the book is called Heart of Mist, so although the beginning of the book is very strong and demonstrates what the mist in this world is capable of doing, I don t think it s much further explored, the mist ends up being a secondary character in the story, and I would have liked a bitabout that In the end, there s a revelation and very valuable information about the mist and its purpose, but I don t want to say much because spoilers, so maybe in the next book this will be explored in greater depthThe book is full of plot twists and revelations around the corner, so you probably will not get bored with it If it s something you enjoy in books this is for you I think it s very well constructed in terms of plot and it s written in an easy form to understand and read, so if fantasy is something that you re not used to, I think it could be a good place to start withI still have many questions and doubts about many points of the book, and that s why I m excited to continue with the trilogy, which I ll do as soon as I can.In summary I think it s a very good book, it has very strong points in terms of the story and world building, but even so I think it needsconstruction, in terms of dialogues and magic system, and I also needinformation regarding several aspects, I like it when a fantasy moves fast and gives you many shocking moments, but at the same time I need it to stop for a moment to find outabout all those fantastic places, gods and , which I hope will happen in the next book

Second time read and review.Okay, first off. I still hate the name Bleak Even though she waslikable this time around still can t like the name No matter how many times I tried saying it out loud. I just got easily annoyed Besides Bleak, Henri was okay but I honestly didn t give two shits about him Yeah, they make a great team every now and then but just like with Bleak, they both annoyed me still I don t know what it is about these two they are just ugh Unsurprisingly, all of th Second time read and review.Okay, first off. I still really enjoyed the book. Now even though I m not a fan of her name. I m also not really a fan of one of the places mentioned in this book Valia It just seemed so freaking weird I know I keep saying that a lot but trust me it really was just because of their standards and how they viewed what was important or people s status life Like I totally get it. you people think you are better than everyone. but hey. whatever helps you sleep at night Characters I didn t like Bleak, Henri, Athene, and Lennox Bleak was just basically bleak She was constantly annoying me because of her consistent whining I just wanted to push her into the mist I didn t like how she pushed everyone s buttons like a child. but I did really enjoy their sarcastic and annoyed answers to her She deserved it so freaking much Then there s Henri at first, I didn t really like Henri s character. then I readandand I decided I really don t like Henri Then there was Athene, who was wei just really weird After meeting them, there s a bunch of other characters I hated, like Lennox I think that s how you spell his name Not quite sure But yeah, I wanted him to die. I totally accept the ending of this book.Besides all of that it did give you a lot of magic Some of it was a bit confusing at first but I sort of just followed along and accepted what I got There was a ton of info dumping in the book as well. which I could take it or leave it in any book really I guess I just had high expectations for this book because of it s ratings I enjoyed but I wouldn t necessarily say it s my favorite book of all time I would probably reread it if she came out with a book 2
