I would like to start this by saying, thank you so much J.T. Ellison for allowing me to volunteer as tribute, and be apart of this book. She is one of my all-time favorite authors, so I am feeling totally blessed right now. Be sure to check this one out, to see just what role I play exactly!

So, does being in this book make me biased? Is it going to make me give this a higher star rating than what it deserves? Hell no. Ellison is one of my favorite authors, because her writing instantly draws you in. I actually read this book in two sittings because I was absolutely hooked. You know when you're watching a movie, or reading a book, and everytime you somewhat get attached to a character, they happen to die? Yeah, well, I'll give you alittle warning; don't get attached to any characters in this one🤣 Literally, SOO many deaths, but it was absolutely brilliant. If I learned anything from this book, it's that I'm seriously glad I'm not rich. Like seriously, money may be able to buy you your own Island, but is it seriously worth it?

This is one of those novels that has A LOT of characters, but you find yourself not being able to trust any of them. Everyone has a massive secret, so when the deaths start occurring, you start questioning everyone and everything. I also loved the idea of this whole book taking place on the remote island, it has some series locked room vibes about it. The scenery was described so beautifully, that I found myself wishing I could visit this island but a lot of death seems to occur there soo better not🤷‍♀️

In Her Dark Lies, artist Claire is about to marry extremely wealthy Jack Compton on his family's private island in Italy. Then the bad things start happening. Do you like excessive descriptions of landscape and locations? Would you like to read page after page of details about the island and house? Do you like it when the protagonists gloss over the major events of the book so they can continue to describe their environment? Then Her Dark Lies is the book for you! I stuck it out to the end, but this book majorly drags. There's a lot of good ideas here, and many of the twists have potential. Unfortunately they never quite clicked. Things that should have been dealt with in detail by the characters (like the ruined wedding dress mentioned in the synopsis) are all just waved away. Perhaps this is supposed to reinforce the idea of a secretive, powerful family, but it felt like something was missing. There were a few twists you could see coming from a mile away, and not because I'm some great detective, but because they've been famously done before. I think there is an audience for this book - I might possibly recommend it for someone who liked The Guest List as a the power goes out at a location wedding readalike, but Her Dark Lies wasn't for me. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review.

J T Ellison is one of my favorite authors but I had a hard time with this book. It was very confusing and I had a lot of questions at the end of the book. Who did kill her???

First of all, thank you so much to J.T. Ellison, Bookclubbish, and HTP Books for my free copy of this book. I loved Good Girls Lie, so I was so excited to get my hands on Her Dark Lies! It was so well written and immediately captured my attention. Someone asked me if it was similar to The Guest List, and maybe a bit by plot, but nothing like it in writing. This book is captivating and dynamic, and I loved it!

Thoughts: I really enjoyed all the dynamics at play in this book. All of the characters were so unique and interesting and I loved how I wasn’t sure who to trust. Reading about a ridiculously rich family is always fun, and this was no exception. The setting of a creepy private island was wonderful and the creep factor was building with each small thing that happened. I never really had a guess on what was going on, but the ending wasn’t what I expected at all. I enjoyed the main character, Claire, and also really liked the character of Anna as well. Also, shout out to my friend Morgan because she was written into the book! So cool!

I enjoyed how the scene was set and I could really imagine myself on the island. I did find myself annoyed at the characters because of their bad decisions and SPOILER: there were so many characters killed off. I kept thinking who will even be left to be the bad guy? Just by process of elimination alone there weren’t many choices. Regardless, I loved the build of this story and the writing in this book. 4-stars for me!

First of all this book involves one of my most favorite thriller tropes: a group of people at a secluded location, in this case an Italian island where Jack and Claire are getting married. Jack is part of a rich socialite family who owns this mansion on the island, and they decide to have their wedding there with only their closest friends and family. We learn pretty early in the book that Jack’s first wife Morgan died by drowning several years prior (and the book also immediately insinuates it was a murder, possibly at the hands of Jack). Claire has her own secrets she is hiding, which unfold slowly throughout the book, but the main aspect of the story definitely revolves around Morgan and the secrets held within Jack’s powerful family, who we learn will do anything to protect their own.

I thought this book was compulsively readable and very bingeable, mostly due to the author’s writing. However for me it ended up being pretty predictable. Clocking in at a little over 400 pages I did feel like the book was a little overly long and there were points in the middle that dragged a bit. The biggest twist is revealed only around 100 pages in, so the rest of the book is basically just watching how that twist unfurls. There are still some smaller dots to connect afterward but I didn’t really find any of them surprising. It was mostly the writing and the way Ellison develops her characters that kept me so engaged in the story.

    ✨Review✨

A huge thank you to @htpbooks @bookclubbish @thrillerchick @_mira_books_ for the free ARC of “Her Dark Lies” to review! This book releases on 3/9/21, but clearly I couldn’t wait to read it!!

“At the wedding of the year, a killer needs no invitation.”

I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK. Let’s start with the writing style. J.T. Ellison has this way of writing that just sucks you in and does not let go until the very last page. This book may have been over 400 pages long, but I wanted MORE! Ellison could have dragged this out for another 100 pages and I would have happily gone along for the ride!

The setting is another thing I loved about this book. I was transported to Isle Isola, off the Italian coast, with the characters and was drawn in by the beauty of the villa. The cover of “Her Dark Lies” is an absolute beauty and I wouldn’t blame you if you picked it up for the cover alone!

The twists and turns were EVERYWHERE. Locked room mysteries are my absolute favorite and usually mean that you have zero idea who to trust. I accused just about everyone while reading this book and I don’t regret it because literally everyone is hiding something.

Whether you’re already an Ellison fan or you’re looking for a new author, please consider preordering a copy of this fabulous read from your local indie bookstore!

    5/5 ⭐️

    3.5 Stars *Rounded Up*

I was sent this book from the publisher/publicity team. My ratings and reviews will be my own personal opinions and are in no way influenced by publishers or authors who may have sent me books to review.

JT Ellison is one of my favorite thriller writers of all time. I was very excited for this one and started it the day it arrived in the mail.

This had a little bit of everything from romance, to mystery/suspense, to historical context. I was really hooked at first and really love how some chapters end with cliff hangers. I personally love when authors leave you hanging at the end of a chapter as it really makes you want to push on. JT Ellison always does this really well.

I do feel this was a little too detailed at times. I am not really into art and such, and there was so much details around scenery and art. I found some of this drawn out a little to much and it would take me out of everything else going on.

Overall, this one delivered in some ways and missed in some others. I am torn on my rating for this one, but still definitely recommend it.

  9. Iz Iz says:

Ellison’s “Tear Me Apart” is one of my favorites and I recommend it often. I’ve read her others since then and they have been good, but haven’t topped TMA yet. This one is no different.

I really enjoyed listening to Claire’s POV but once the second narrator comes into play, the book picks up quickly.

I found it kind of ridiculous to think anyone, even the great Compton family, would move forward after the “surprises” and then Henna. Come on....as if all that could be hidden from the guests. Nope...too hard to swallow.

But overall, I did enjoy this one and flew through the last half in one day. So, that on its own gives it a solid 3.5.

Still an Ellison fan. Keep em coming!
